Interested in Comparing Energy Costs of Different Home Heating Equipment?

NW Natural’s Equipment Cost Comparison Tool was created to help users select the energy source and equipment that’s best for them. Unlike other equipment calculators, the Equipment Cost Comparison Tool allows users to compare various types of heating and cooling equipment based on actual local energy rates and weather data. Plus, it can be customized to your home’s size, occupancy and efficiency. To find the calculator, go to

• Equipment operating costs are calculated using actual oil, gas and electric rates
• Local weather data is used to analyze climate impact on energy usage
• Particular home specifications are applied to provide accurate results

• Compare current heating and cooling equipment with up to two other options
• Quick and easy to complete – 10 simple questions
• Fine-tune results with additional inputs
• Estimate the payback period of purchasing new equipment
• Email results
• Download or print results for future reference
• Share results through social media
• Use the tool through any mobile device or online
• Analysis is provided by CakeSystems from Earth Advantage Institute

Frequently Asked Questions
1 How accurate is the analysis?
Results of the tool (when used without the fine-tuning inputs) are 17% – 21% lower than the CakeSystems model for current heating equipment energy predictions. When the fine-tune inputs are added, the results align very well with CakeSystems at 0.4% – 1% variation.

2 What appliances does it compare?
Find cost comparisons for oil and natural gas furnaces of varying efficiency (with or without an air-conditioning system) and heat pumps of varying efficiency.

3 What else does this tool do?
Once the questionnaire is complete, use the tool to:
• Find a contractor
• Contact NW Natural to learn more about natural gas service and equipment
• Estimate the payback period of purchasing new equipment

4 Doesn’t it have a bias toward natural gas?
No. The tool draws its data from the Earth Advantage Institute. The institute is a nonprofit whose mission is “to design tools to create better buildings, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change.”
The tool is an objective source of accurate information, updated regularly to take into account NW Natural rate changes, as well as those of all electric utilities within NW Natural’s service area and current heating oil prices.

5 How reliable is this information?
Very reliable. The cost comparison program relies on software called CakeSystems, designed by Earth Advantage. A study conducted for Energy Trust of Oregon found CakeSystems to be the best out of five comparable tools for accuracy and efficiency. Earth Advantage also conducted its own 300-home pilot study which found the CakeSystems results to be accurate and consistent.

6 If a user completes the form, will they get solicitations from heating contractors or the gas company?
No. Unless the user contacts a contractor or NW Natural using the tool, no one will know they have used the tool. And using the tool does not obligate them in any way.
